How to Spot Fake Pokémon Cards: 8 Checks (Real vs Fake)

Fake Pokémon cards are everywhere, from cheap online bundles to market stalls. The good news: most fakes fail simple checks you can do at home in a minute. Compare a suspect card with one you know is real.

8 checks for fake Pokémon cards

1. The light test – shine a phone torch through the card. Real cards have a dark inner layer and let very little light through; many fakes glow brightly.
2. The card back – real backs have a rich, even blue with a smooth swirl. Fakes are often too purple, too light or blurry.
3. Fonts and text – look for spelling mistakes, odd spacing, the wrong font or text that does not fit the box. Real cards are carefully proofread.
4. Energy symbols and HP – fakes often have wrong-sized energy symbols, strange HP values (like 1000 HP) or attacks that do not make sense.
5. Holo pattern and finish – real holos have a specific, crisp pattern; fakes often have the same rainbow shine over the whole card or a glossy, plastic feel.
6. Edges and cut – real cards have clean, even edges. Fakes can be rough, slightly too large or too small.
7. Thickness and feel – fakes are often thinner and floppier, or unusually stiff and glossy.
8. The price – a “100 rare cards for a few hundred Taka” deal is almost always fake.

The well-known rip test (tearing a card to see the black core) works, but it destroys the card – only use it on a card you already believe is fake.

Buying safely in Bangladesh

• Buy sealed packs from sellers who show the products clearly and answer questions.
• Be careful with loose “bulk rare” lots and very low prices.
